Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what personal data StudyLumina collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to your use of the Service.
1. Data we collect
Account data: your name (optional), email address and authentication credentials. Content data: the documents you upload and the study aids generated from them. Usage data: actions you take in the app (such as quizzes attempted and study sessions) and technical information such as device and log data needed to operate and secure the Service.
2. How we use your data
We use your data to provide and improve the Service: to authenticate you, store and process your documents, generate summaries, flashcards and quizzes, compute your Exam Readiness Score, deliver the AI tutor, provide support, operate billing, and keep the Service secure.
3. Legal bases
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on the performance of our contract with you (to provide the Service), your consent (where requested), and our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Service.
4. Service providers
We share data with trusted providers strictly to operate the Service: a payment processor (Stripe) for billing; large-language-model providers to generate study aids and tutor answers; an email provider to send transactional messages; and cloud hosting and storage providers. These providers process data on our behalf under appropriate safeguards.
5. AI processing
To generate study aids and tutor answers, relevant excerpts of your documents are sent to third-party AI providers. We send only what is needed to produce the requested output. We do not sell your personal data.
6. Data retention
We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete any document at any time. When you delete your account from your settings, your data (profile, courses, documents, quizzes, flashcards, readiness history, tutor conversations) is erased immediately from our database and storage, and any active subscription is cancelled. Our payment provider (Stripe) keeps its own billing records as the law requires.
7. Your rights
You can access, correct, export and delete your personal information at any time. Export (a JSON file) and account deletion are available directly in Settings → Data & privacy, without writing to us. You can also withdraw consent or object to some processing by contacting us. If you live in Québec, you may file a complaint with the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec; elsewhere in Canada, with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
8. Cookies and analytics
We only use strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in and secure the Service. Our audience statistics (Umami) work without cookies and without advertising identifiers. We use no third-party advertising cookies.
9. Security
We use technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including access controls and encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes
We may update this Policy and will post the new version with an updated date. We will communicate material changes where reasonable.
12. Transfers outside Québec
Some of our providers (AI, hosting, payment, email) may process your information outside Québec and Canada, notably in the United States. We only share what the requested service needs, and these providers are contractually bound to protect it.
13. Person in charge of personal information
Under Québec's Law 25 (Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector), the person in charge of the protection of personal information at StudyLumina is the company's founder. You can reach them at contact@studylumina.com for any question, access request or complaint. If a confidentiality incident presents a risk of serious injury, we will notify you and the Commission d'accès à l'information.
